Nick Atkins, the rector.
I come from North London where I lived with my younger sister, mum and dad. I was a choir boy at my home church of Emmanuel, Northwood until my voice broke and then, having given my life to Jesus, joined in many church activities including leading a youth group and holiday clubs.
On leaving school I went to work at the Harrow Land Registry Plans Dept where I spent 6 years as Executive Officer. During my time there I was selected for training to the Anglican ordained ministry and spent 3 years at Oak Hill Theological College in Southgate London. It was whilst there that I met and married my wife Terry who was the Principal’s secretary.
My 2 curacies were 3 years in a united benefice in Shepton Mallet in Somerset, where both our boys were born, and then 2 years in Bath. This led to a team vicar’s post in Clay Cross near Chesterfield where we had to move within the team as reductions were being made – 10 months at one church and then 5 years at the bigger church! As reductions were still being made we moved to Essington in South Staffs where we had 7 happy years. It’s since 2005 that we have enjoyed ministering in Ipswich where many changes have happened both within the parish, and the family, with both boys marrying American girls! They still live in England though.
To relax I enjoy reading crime novels, visiting the cinema, supporting my home team of Watford (with Ipswich FC a close 2nd), walking in God’s wonderful creation and spending time with my wife and family.
Exciting challenges continue in ministry and God is faithful and will continue to lead us and the parish into his exciting future as we work with the Inspiring Ipswich vision and I try to handle being Area Dean of Ipswich too!
Andrew Buttress, the curate.
Hi, I’m Andy, married to Dawn with three children in their twenties – Kori, Ciaran and Sam. I am the curate at St Matthew’s but as from January 2020, myself and Dawn will be leading a church plant in Ipswich.
We have lived in Ipswich for just over a year. Prior to that we were living in Durham for one year (whilst training) and before that we lived in Great Barton near Bury St Edmunds. We have also lived in Oswestry, Shropshire.
Back in the day, I have worked for Barclays, BT and Community Education, Suffolk. We enjoy travelling, walking and having a meal with friends.
I enjoy having a laugh – at Ipswich Town, the Church of England and Peter Kay. I am a lifelong Leeds United fan although I also have a ‘soft spot’ for Bolton Wanderers!!!
Ruth Best, self supporting minister.
As SSM (self supporting minister) I am so privileged to be involved with ministry at St Matthew’s Church. My role involves taking services at St Matthews, and occasionally at Triangle and All Saints. As part of the leadership team I am active in encouraging the whole congregation to be involved in God’s mission in the place He has put them. With Inspiring Ipswich gaining momentum this is very exciting, and a bit nerve wracking.
Favourite things that I do include baptisms, babies, Messy Church and Toddlers, and getting alongside people, preferably over coffee and cake. Chocolate also comes into a lot of my activities.
Things I am not so keen on is admin, and some preparation.
Kim, my husband, is a great help in supporting me, and this includes cooking dinner each night! I also spend time looking after our very energetic granddaughter.
